August 29th @ 4:00 PM | Fulbright Scholarship Q&A featuring alumnus Jesse Marks

Jesse Marks (BA, 2016) is a foreign affairs and policy expert, with extensive experience in foreign policy, peace and conflict studies, humanitarian response, and China-Middle East relations. He currently is an Associate Director for the Middle East and China with Edelman Global Advisory. He previously served as an advisor for Middle East Policy in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy from 2020-2022. Marks spent five years in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East as a Boren Scholar, Fulbright Fellow at the Jordan Center for Strategic Studies, Scoville Fellow at the Stimson Center’s Protecting Civilians in Conflict, and a Schwarzman Scholar at Tsinghua University in Beijing. His work is published with Washington Post, Carnegie Middle East, Foreign Affairs, Atlantic Council, Middle East Institute, and more. He holds a Masters in Global Affairs from Tsinghua University, Beijing, an MPhil in International Relations and Politics from the University of Cambridge, BA in Middle East Studies, and an AA from Florida Community College of Jacksonville.

August 30th @ 4:30 PM | Gilman Scholarship Q&A featuring alumnus Charles Ford

Charles Ford III is an alumnus of Florida State University (B.S. '18) and the University of South Florida College Public Health (M.P.H '20), who believes in the power of health prevention and promotion through conversation and instruction. In 2017, Charles was awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholar and completed a pre-medical internship with the FSU Global Scholars Program and the NGO Humanity and Community Development Projects (HDCP) Ghana in Ho, Ghana. From this experience Charles grew his passions for helping others through public health and infection prevention. Following graduation from USF, Charles worked for the Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough and Miami-Dade Counties as an Epidemiologist for the COVID-19 pandemic response and most recently started his career as an Infection Preventionist with HCA Florida Aventura Hospital. His research interests include multi drug resistant organisms, vector-borne diseases, and emerging infectious diseases. Recently, Charles was selected as a 2022-2023 Gilman Alumni Ambassador to speak on his experiences abroad and promote the program through social networking and presentation.

Lauren Thornberg is a second-year student in the urban and regional planning master's program at FSU, specializing in environmental planning. She graduated from FSU with a Bachelor of Science degree in anthropology in 2021. She is a 2019 CLS Chinese recipient and a 2016 student ambassador for the 100,000 Strong China initiative.

Trystan is a first-year social psychology PhD student at Boston College studying moral identity and interventions for bridging social divides. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from FSU last spring as a Psychology major in the Presidential Scholars program. Trystan is a Goldwater Scholarship recipient and an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship recipient.

Topic: The strengths, stereotypes, and pitfalls of mindfulness

Cameron is licensed clinical social worker and 500HR yoga instructor with almost a decade of experience in the social services industry. She combines her clinical skill set with a holistic, integrative approach to her work with clients. Cameron has her own private practice, Intuitive Minds Counseling and Wellness, where she offers her services to the community.
